Blue Light windows in Amsterdam

Date: 7. jul 2018.

Red light district in Amsterdam is the major tourist attraction that you can visit during your Amsterdam tour. The prostitution was always present in the city, ever since the 12th century when the city was established. Prostitution was always tolerated and in the old times the sailors were the biggest customers. Some say the origin of the red light comes from the red lanterns carried by railway workers, which were left outside brothels when the workers entered, so that they could be quickly located for any needed train movement. These lanterns were left outside bordellos when crew members stopped to pay the ladies a visit and sometimes were brought inside to be placed in a window. Others speculate that the origin comes from the red paper lanterns that were hung outside brothels in ancient China to identify them as such. It was said that the lights were thought to be sensual.

The prostitution was legalized in Amsterdam in 2000 and the prostitutes are located within the three Red Light Districts of Amsterdam. When you stroll through the streets of the Red Light District you might notice an occasional blue light in the window which means that the person behind the window was not born as a woman. The blue lights are reserved for transgender persons and transvestites or as they are called the lady boys, she-males or t-girls. It is a sure sign that the person in the window was not born a woman.

The Netherlands was the first country in Europe to give rights to transgender persons in 1985 but the article 28 of the Dutch Civil Code violates transgender people’s human rights. Netherlands’s laws require transgender people to take hormones, surgically alter their bodies, and undergo permanent and irreversible sterilization before they can have their gender legally recognized on official documents. These strenuous requirements violate transgender people’s human rights to personal autonomy, physical integrity, and personal ability to define gender identity.

In 2013, the Dutch Senate approved the new law on transgender rights that is one step forward to equality. It does away with previous requirements for taking hormones and surgery, including irreversible sterilization, though it is a step short of complete personal autonomy for the decision.

Transgender and transvestite persons are legally working as prostitutes in the Red Light District. Incidentally, the blue lights are an informal convention, not a legal requirement; it is not unknown for transvestites and she-males to work without them, particularly if they are given a room that does not usually cater to ladyboys. So look carefully if you are interested only in natural born woman, because in case of the wrong judgment on your part you will be obligated by law to pay for the service and the patrolling police in the area and the bodyguards will make sure that you do.

Some ladyboys are extremely convincing, especially to the first timers. The convention is that they should have a blue, rather than regular red, light in their windows and this is accepted as sufficient disclosure. It is not that they particularly want to cheat anyone but the feeling is that, if an innocent tourist wanders in, pays his money and then discovers a penis where he did not expect one, that is his blunder, the sex worker gets to keep the cash. As we said before, the prostitutes are displayed in the window, and as you know now the red light in the window does not stand only for natural born woman (in the small percentage though) due to the reasons mentioned above. So look carefully at the prostitutes that are offering themselves in the window because there are many features that can reveal the gender of the person. If you are into “blue light” sex services, the procedure is the same. There is a certain starting price and the rest depends on your negotiation skills.
