The High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam

Date: 7. jul 2018.

The following pages are for the purposes of education and information only. This should not be considered in any way to condone the use of cannabis, marijuana or other mind-altering substances.

Amsterdam is among other things famous for its special policy on soft drugs and legalized prostitution. It is also the only city in Netherlands where the tourists (if they are over 18 years old) can purchase and consume cannabis in the Coffee Shops. They are the only place where you can legally buy and use cannabis. In the other cities of Netherlands, only the locals are eligible for purchase of cannabis in the Coffee Shops with their ID and the proof of residence.

If you decide to go on Amsterdam tour in November you will have an opportunity to experience the one of a kind event in the world, the Cannabis Cup. In 2010, the first Cannabis Cup was held also in the US and now it became a yearly festival that celebrates the medical marijuana in the states that have passed medical marijuana laws. The full name of the festival is High Times Cannabis Cup which is the world’s foremost cannabis festival.

Steven Hager, the editor of the High Times Magazine had started the Cannabis Cup in 1987 in Amsterdam and is being held every year in November. The 28th annual Cannabis Cup will be held in November this year, but it hasn’t been announced yet. Every year the details are made public around October, this year it will mark more than a quarter of a century of its existence in Amsterdam. In the previous years, it was taking place at the RAI conference center and Melkweg Club.

The experts from Soma Seeds, T.H. Seeds, Barney’s, DNA, Big Buddha, Cali Connection and the Greenhouse will be present in November 2015 to talk about the cultivation and care of plants. Expert’s advice from the hosts of the party, the High Times Magazine, will also be available in the form of the resident gurus. The Cannabis Cup will be open every day of the event, starting noon.

This event allows the judges from around the world to sample and vote for their favorite marijuana varieties. They are deciding on the overall winner in the cannabis variety competition, best new products, best booth, best glass, best hash and the best Neder hash. The VIP team of judges decides which seed company has grown the best indica, sativa and hybrid strain and which company has produced the best Neder hash and best-imported hash. The High Times Cannabis Cup also includes live music events, educational seminars and expo for marijuana-related products.

One of the most desired ways to participate the Cannabis Cup is to obtain the “judges pass” that will allow you to have your say on what are the best strains of marijuana at the Cup. Passes can be bought online for about 280 dollars and they allow the holders to mark their impression of each strain they try and that way give their vote for the final winners in each category. It should be noted that these passes don’t allow you to carry the marijuana with you and smoke in the public, but there are many stalls in the expo offering free samples.

The Counterculture Hall of fame holds its ceremony during the High Times Cannabis Cup each November. This year also, it will induct a worthy person into the High Times Counterculture Hall of Fame.

All cannabis products are additionally tested for THC content by independent cannabis testing laboratories.
